Sefydlu corff newydd ar gyfer y proffesiwn fferyllol |
 |
Mae'r gwaith o ddatblygu corff rheoleiddio newydd ar gyfer y proffesiwn fferyllol yn mynd yn ei flaen, dan oruchwyliaeth Grŵp Arolygu Rheoleiddio ac Arweiniad y Proffesiwn Fferyllol (PRLOG). Cyhoeddwyd Prosbectws, llyfryn sydd yn disgrifio swyddogaethau arfaethedig y sefydliad newydd, ac mae hynny'n gam pwysig yn natblygiad y broses. Wedi'i gyhoeddi gan bwyllgor annibynnol fu'n gyfrifol am chwilio barn y proffesiwn, mae'r llyfryn yn esbonio sut y bydd y corff newydd yn ategu ac yn datblygu cryfderau'r Gymdeithas Fferyllol Frenhinol a'r sefydliadau eraill sydd wedi dangos diddordeb mewn bod yn rhan o'r fenter newydd.
R'yn ni'n falch iawn bod y Prosbectws yn cydnabod pwysigrwydd datganoli a bod yna gefnogaeth a llais i'r proffesiwn nid yn unig yn Lloegr ond yng Nghymru ac yn yr Alban hefyd.
Bydd y Prosbectws yn fodd i chwilio barn bellach ar y modd y dylai'r corff proffesiynol newydd weithredu, er mwyn sicrhau ei fod yn fywiog ac yn ateb gofynion y proffesiwn.

Croeso |

Croeso i rifyn diweddaraf cylchlythyr Pharmac-e gan Fwrdd Fferylliaeth Cymru y Gymdeithas Fferyllol Frenhinol. Wrth i ddiwedd y flwyddyn nesau, mae'n demtasiwn edrych yn ôl ar y flwyddyn a fu. I ni ym myd fferylliaeth, fodd bynnag, mae hi'n fwy addas efallai i edrych tua'r dyfodol – ac ystyried y cyfleoedd sydd yn debygol o godi yn 2009.
Mae cynlluniau y llywodraeth ar gyfer GIG newydd i Gymru yn anelu i wella gwasanaeth, ansawdd a hygyrchedd y GIG. Mae gan y tîm fferyllol rôl allweddol i'w chwarae yma a byddwn yn sicrhau bod llais fferyllwyr yn cael ei glywed fel rhan o'r broses ddiwygio (gweler isod) ac yn natblygiad parhaol gwasanaethau i gleifion.
Bydd 2009 hefyd yn dod a chyfleoedd ar gyfer newid y Gymdeithas Fferyllol Frenhinol. Mae'n bosib y byddwch yn cofio i ni sôn yn gynharach eleni am benderfyniad Llywodraeth San Steffan i rannu'r swyddogaethau proffesiynol a rheoleiddio a gyflawnir ar hyn o bryd gan y Gymdeithas, yn unol ag argymhellion Papur Gwyn Chwefror 2008, Trust, Assurance and Safety: the regulation of health professionals. Gallwch ddarllen am y datblygiadau diweddaraf yn hyn o beth isod.
Yn y cyfamser, yng nghanol yr holl newidiadau hyn, r'yn ni'n dal i weithio fel arfer i gynrychioli a chefnogi'r proffesiwn fferyllol yng Nghymru. Cofiwch bod tîm y Gyfarwyddiaeth Gymreig yng Nghaerdydd yn hapus bob amser i dderbyn eich ymholiadau, felly cysylltwch â nhw ar bob cyfrif os bydd angen gwybodaeth neu gyngor arnoch.
Yn olaf, hoffwn gymryd y cyfle hwn i ddymuno'n dda i chi dros gyfnod yr ŵyl, ar ran holl staff Bwrdd Fferylliaeth Cymru. |

Darparu GIG newydd i Gymru |
 |
Byddwn yn treulio'r wythnosau nesaf yn datblygu'n hymateb ni i gyfnod diweddaraf y broses ymgynghori ar strwythur yGIG.
Mae'r gwaith o sefydlu strwythurau newydd GIG Cymru yn gyfle i sicrhau y gall y sefydliadau hyn ddarparu'r gwasanaethau gorau posib i bobl yng Nghymru. Mae defnyddio meddyginiaethau yn rhan greiddiol o'r gwasanaethau hyn ac mae hi'n hollbwysig bod sgiliau ac arbenigedd y proffesiwn fferyllol yn cael ei ddefnyddio i'r eithaf ar lefel strategol a gweithredol.
Mae'r Bwrdd Fferyllol Cymreig yn awyddus i sicrhau bod cyngor ac arbenigedd fferyllol ar gael ar lefel strategol er mwyn dylanwadu ar benderfyniadau gaiff eu gwneud ar ddefnydd diogel a chost-effeithiol o feddyginiaethau, ar y cyd ag aelodau proffesiynol eraill byd gofal iechyd. |

Gwybodaeth am Wrthfiotigau |
 |
I gefnogi ymgyrch Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru i godi ymwybyddiaeth ynglŷn â'r defnydd o wrthfiotigau, mae Bwrdd Fferylliaeth Cymru wedi ailddosbarthu'r pamffled “Gwybodaeth am Wrthfiotigau” i bob fferyllfa gymunedol yng Nghymru. Mae'r pamffled yn ategu'r adnoddau a gynhyrchwyd gan Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru ac yn gefnogaeth barod i fferyllwyr Cymru wrth iddyn nhw geisio cyfleu negeseuon pwysig ynglŷn â'r defnydd o wrthfiotigau. Un nod allweddol y gaeaf hwn fydd ceisio addysgu'r cyhoedd ynglŷn â defnydd addas o wrthfiotigau – a phwysleisio'r neges nad oes angen gwrthfiotigau bob amser os byddant yn dioddef annwyd neu beswch ac y dylent ymweld â'u fferyllfa leol os hoffent gael meddyginiaethau i drin symptomau.
Byddwn yn gweithio hefyd â rhan-ddalwyr allweddol ledled Cymru i sicrhau'r defnydd gorau posib o arbenigedd y proffesiwn fferyllol wrth fynd ati i geisio sicrhau bod gwrthfiotigau'n cael eu defnyddio mewn modd addas ac effeithiol ymhob maes gofal iechyd.

Fferyllwyr yn annog dynion i fod yn llai 'macho' |
 |
Yn ddiweddar, bu Bwrdd Fferylliaeth Cymru yn gweithio gydag un o sêr rygbi amlycaf Cymru ar ymgyrch i annog dynion i ofyn am gyngor meddygol yn eu fferyllfa leol.
Deilliodd yr ymgyrch, a lansiwyd gan James Hook a chynrychiolydd Bwrdd Cymru, Elen Jones, ym Mharc yr Arfau ar 17 Tachwedd, o waith ymchwil wedi'i gomisiynu gan yr RPSGB. Roedd yr ymchwil hwnnw'n dangos bod 62% o ddynion yn gyndyn i chwilio cymorth meddygol oni bai eu bod 'yn sâl iawn neu mewn poen difrifol’. Fe allai agwedd ‘macho’ o'r fath fod yn cael effaith ddifrifol ar iechyd dynion, a lleihau ei disgwyliad oes o hyd at bum mlynedd. Gall olygu hefyd bod y risg o ddatblygu anhwylderau cronig yn fwy i ddynion nag i fenywod. Mae agweddau o'r fath yn lleihau'r posibilrwydd hefyd o sicrhau diagnosis cynnar.
Nod yr ymgyrch oedd annog dynion i fanteisio ar y gwasanaethau a gynigir gan y fferyllfa leol, trwy ofyn am gyngor neu brawf iechyd. Mae profion pwysedd gwaed a BMI, help i roi'r gorau i ysmygu, sgrinio diabetes, a sgrinio a thriniaeth Chlamydia oll ar gael eisoes fel gwasanaethau tâl mewn nifer o fferyllfeydd ar hyd a lled Cymru. Mae rhai o'r gwasanaethau hyn ar gael gan y Gwasanaeth Iechyd Cenedlaethol ond mae'r ddarpariaeth ledled Cymru yn anghyson ar hyn o bryd. Mae yna ddwy brif neges felly; galwn ar ddynion Cymru i wneud y defnydd gorau posib o'r fferyllfa leol. R'yn ni'n galw hefyd ar GIG Cymru i sicrhau bod gwasanaethau priodol ar gael i ddynion pan gyrhaeddan nhw'r fferyllfa. |

Fferyllwyr yn cefnogi Wythnos Byw'n Iach |
 |
Am y drydedd flwyddyn o'r bron, roedden ni'n falch iawn o gefnogi Wythnos Byw'n Iach trwy ymuno â thros ugain o sefydliadau eraill ar stondin arbennig yn Oriel y Senedd ar Dachwedd 4ydd.
Roedd y digwyddiad yn gyfle unwaith eto i hyrwyddo'r neges bod gan fferyllwyr rôl allweddol i'w chwarae wrth geisio annog pobl i fyw'n iach. Cynrychiolydd y Bwrdd Fferyllol Cymreig ar y stondin oedd Richard Evans, sydd hefyd yn fferyllydd cymunedol. Fe gynhaliodd ef brofion pwysedd gwaed a BMI (Body Mass Index) ar Aelodau Cynulliad, staff ac aelodau'r cyhoedd fel ei gilydd. Roedd yr Is-Weinidog Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol, Gwenda Thomas AC, yn un o nifer helaeth o bobl gafodd brawf pwysedd gwaed.
Mae'r Gymdeithas Fferyllol Frenhinol yn falch iawn o fod wedi chwarae rhan yn Wythnos Byw'n Iach eleni ac r'yn ni'n edrych ymlaen eisoes at ddigwyddiad y flwyddyn nesaf!

Establishing a new body for the pharmacy profession |
 |
Work continues to develop a new regulatory body for the pharmacy profession overseen by the Pharmacy Regulation and Leadership Oversight Group (PRLOG). The pharmacy profession has taken the next important steps in the development of its new professional body with the publication of its Prospectus, a blueprint for the new organisation. Published by an independent committee tasked with gathering views across the profession, the Prospectus sets out how it will build on the strengths not only of RPSGB but of the other pharmacy organisations that have expressed an interest of being part of the new venture.
We are delighted that the Prospectus acknowledges the importance of devolution and that the profession is supported and its voice is heard not only in England but equally in Scotland and Wales.
The Prospectus will help to gauge further views of the how the new professional body should function to ensure it is vibrant and responsive to the needs of the profession.

Welcome |
 |
Welcome to the latest edition of Pharmac-e from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Welsh Pharmacy Board. As we approach the year end it is tempting to look back over the old year, however for pharmacy it is probably more appropriate to keep looking forward and reflect on what opportunities 2009 will bring.
The Government’s plan to deliver the new NHS for Wales aims to enhance the quality, performance and accessibility to NHS. The pharmacy team has a key role to play here and we will be ensuring that pharmacists’ voice is heard as part of the reform programme (see below) and in the ongoing development of patient services.
2009 will also bring opportunities for change for RPSGB. You may remember earlier in the year that we informed you of the Westminster Government’s intention to separate the regulation and professional roles undertaken by RPSGB as outlined in its February 2008 White Paper, Trust, Assurance and Safety: the regulation of health professionals. An update on these developments is provided below.
In the meanwhile, amongst all this change, it is still ‘business as usual’ in terms of representing and supporting the pharmacy profession in Wales. Remember that our team at the Welsh Directorate in Cardiff are always glad to receive enquiries and requests for information, so please do get in touch with them should you require any information and advice.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Welsh Pharmacy Board and its staff to send all our readers our very best wishes for the festive season.

Delivering the new NHS for Wales |
 |
We will be spending the next few weeks developing our response to the latest phase of consultation on the new NHS structure.
The work to establish the new structures of NHS Wales provides an opportunity to ensure that these organisations are able to deliver the best possible services to the people of Wales. With the use of medicines a key element of these services, it is essential that the unique skills and expertise of the pharmacy profession be fully utilised at a strategic and operational level.
The Welsh Pharmacy Board is keen to ensure that pharmaceutical advice and expertise must be available at a strategic level to inform and make decisions on issues relating to the safe and cost effective use of medicines in partnership with other healthcare professionals.

Ask about antibiotics |
 |
Supporting the Welsh Assembly Government campaign for raising awareness on the use of antibiotics, the Welsh Pharmacy Board has redistributed its “Ask about Antibiotics” leaflet to all community pharmacies across Wales. It complements the resource produced by the Welsh Assembly Government and supports pharmacists across Wales in delivering the important messages on antibiotic use. A key aim for this winter is to help inform the public on appropriate use of antibiotics with the overriding message that people suffering minor ailments like coughs and common colds do not routinely need antibiotics and should be encouraged to visit their local pharmacy if they want something to relieve their symptoms.
We will also be working with key stakeholders across Wales to ensure that the expertise of the pharmacy profession in the appropriate use of antibiotics is fully utilised across all care settings.

Pharmacists urge men to be less 'macho' |
 |
The Welsh Pharmacy Board ‘Hooked up’ with one of Wales’s best known rugby internationals in a campaign to encourage more men to visit their local pharmacy to seek medical advice.
The campaign, launched by James Hook and Welsh Board representative Elen Jones at Cardiff Arms Park on 17 November, comes after research commissioned by the RPSGB revealed that 62% of men are reluctant to ask for help and will only seek medical advice if they are ‘very ill or in great pain’. This tendency to display a ‘macho’ attitude to health could be costing men dearly with a reduction in men’s life expectancy by up to five years, being at greater risk than women of developing chronic illnesses and limiting opportunities for early diagnoses.
The campaign urged men to take advantage of the services that are offered by their local pharmacy by asking for advice or a health check. Blood pressure and BMI measurements, smoking cessation, diabetes screening, Chlamydia screening and treatment are already available as a paid for service at many pharmacies across Wales. Some services are available on the NHS but provision is currently patchy across Wales. Whilst we are calling on men to make best use of pharmacy we are calling on NHS Wales to ensure that they can access appropriate NHS services when they get there.

Pharmacists support Healthy Living Week |
 |
For the third year running we were pleased to support Healthy Living Week by joining over twenty other organisations in hosting a stand in the Senedd Oriel on 4th November. The event provided us with the opportunity once again to promote the message that pharmacists have a key role to play in supporting healthy living. The stand was manned by community pharmacist and Welsh Pharmacy Board Member Richard Evans, who carried out blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) tests on Assembly Members, staff, and members of the public. Deputy Minister for Social Services Gwenda Thomas AM, was one of the many who took the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked.
The RPSGB is proud to have been part of Healthy Living Week and are already looking forward to next year’s event!
